Many of us suffer from occasional heartburn, indigestion or Acid Reflux, and the older we get it seems more likely to occur.

Throat problems associated with Reflux include hoarseness, throat clearing, feeling like there is a lump in your throat and coughing.

To control the acid indigestion and Reflux problems, some basic things done throughout the day may need to be adjusted and changed. Watching what you eat is very important. Sometimes it is wise to keep a food diary so you can pin down exactly what it is that triggers the acid indigestion symptoms.

Watching when you eat is also important. Try to avoid eating just before going to sleep. Allow three or four hours before you lie down and that includes no snacking.   

If you regularly consume caffeine and alcohol and smoke cigarettes, these will contribute and worsen the symptoms.


Other conditions that can bring on heartburn, acid indigestion and Reflux include pregnancy and very stressful times in our lives, but once again the most common cause is certain types of foods.

The top 26 offenders are: fried chicken, buffalo wings, brownies, butter cookies, processed chicken parts available from fast food restaurants, chocolate, coffee, snack foods including corn chips, cottage cheese, cranberry juice, creamy and oily salad dressings, doughnuts, grapefruit juice, ground beef, ice cream, lemons and lemonade, beer, wine and liquor, macaroni and cheese, fatty beef, orange juice, potato chips, potato salad, carbonated soda drinks, sour cream, tomato sauces, tea and tomatoes.

There may be some foods in addition to this list that can cause heartburn. A food diary will help identify those.

Acid reflux can be a very minor problem and be bothersome, or it can be significant and lead to damage of the throat and esophagus.
